British Columbia Boosts Funding for Gambling Harm Research
The British Columbia government and BC Lottery Corporation (BCLC) have reaffirmed their commitment to gambling harm research by allocating an additional CA$1.4 million (£818,902/€955,867/US$1.0 million) for ongoing studies in the province.
The funds will continue to support initiatives at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Centre for Gambling Research, where research into responsible and problematic gambling has been conducted since its establishment in 2014. The focus includes understanding gambling behaviors and developing improved programs and treatments to address risks associated with problem gambling.
This latest financial commitment marks the third consecutive five-year term of support from both the British Columbia government and BCLC. The ongoing collaboration underscores the significance of the research in shaping policies and strategies aimed at protecting residents from the negative impacts of problem gambling.
Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor-General, expressed gratitude for the valuable work conducted by the Centre for Gambling Research, emphasizing its role in informing government policies related to harm reduction and public health approaches to prevent problem gambling.
