CFL’s Shawn Lemon Appeals Lifetime Betting Ban
Shawn Lemon, a veteran player in the Canadian Football League (CFL), is contesting his lifetime ban from the league after an investigation revealed he had placed bets on games during the 2021 season while playing for the Calgary Stampeders. Despite conclusive evidence showing Lemon wagered on a game in which he participated, the league stated there was no indication that his betting influenced the outcome of any games.
Lemon, a three-time Grey Cup champion, is now challenging the league's decision. He has resumed practicing with the Montreal Alouettes and could potentially return to active play pending an arbitrator’s decision on his appeal.
In April, Lemon unexpectedly announced his retirement from the CFL shortly after signing a one-year contract extension with the Alouettes. Two weeks following his retirement announcement, the CFL issued the lifetime ban. Lemon has remained silent on the matter, merely stating, “we’ll let the due process work itself out” when approached by reporters.
CFL regulations strictly prohibit players from betting on league games, a rule that Lemon allegedly violated. However, Lemon’s return to the field and his appeal have garnered the backing of the CFL Players' Association (CFLPA). Alouettes General Manager Danny Maciocia confirmed Lemon's decision to appeal the suspension and highlighted that the CFLPA has filed a grievance against the indefinite suspension.
CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie expressed his disappointment with the Players' Association's decision to support Lemon’s appeal. He emphasized the critical importance of upholding the league's integrity, noting, “The league’s rules prohibiting CFL-related gambling in 2021 were made abundantly clear to all players at the time, yet Mr. Lemon knowingly ignored those rules. The prohibition of wagering on the CFL by CFL personnel, including players, is critical to the reputation and standing of the league. The CFL will vigorously defend its position at the arbitration hearing.”
The CFL's relationship with the gambling industry has been evolving, marked by a significant partnership last July when FanDuel became the league’s first authorized gaming operator and official sportsbook partner. The league also maintains partnerships with other betting platforms, including NEO.bet and 888.
As the appeal process unfolds, Lemon’s future in the CFL remains uncertain, hinging on the upcoming arbitration decision that will either uphold or overturn his lifetime ban.

SoTerrible Michigan regulators should focus on fixing their casinos instead of forcing people to play with garbage RTPs. Give us fair odds, and maybe we’ll stay!

kikkersoep Damn, I've been spinning this Animal Magic 1000 all week too, but I haven't caught more than x200! How did Squad get x12000 at all?? There's a dead slot!

BuisnessPig This is an interesting case, but it feels like a loophole is being exploited. Players lost money, and now it looks like the operators don’t have to give it back. It’s frustrating when legal decisions seem to favor the businesses instead of protecting consumers.

PolishPigwin Sad to see this happening. It’s one thing to follow in your father’s footsteps, but another to sell out for an easy paycheck. There’s no honor in gambling sponsorships, especially in a sport where dedication and hard work should be the focus.
I'm glad to see Lemon back with the Alouettes, even if it's just for practice right now. Everyone makes mistakes, and it’s good that he’s fighting for his career. Hopefully, the appeal process will be fair and balanced. The league's partnership with betting companies makes this whole situation even more complicated.
Shawn Lemon has been a great player over the years, but he clearly broke the rules. The integrity of the sport is paramount, and players need to be held accountable. It’s disappointing to see the CFLPA backing this appeal when the rules were clear. Gambling on your own games is a serious breach of trust.
This is such a tough situation. I get that rules are rules, but a lifetime ban seems really harsh if there’s no evidence his betting affected the game outcomes. The league should focus on rehabilitating players rather than issuing lifetime bans. I hope the arbitrator considers all aspects before making a final decision.
