Pickering Casino Halts Operations Following Tragic Shooting
In the wake of a heartbreaking incident that claimed the life of a security guard, Pickering Casino Resort has temporarily suspended its operations. The incident occurred on Thanksgiving morning when 34-year-old Michael Ferdinand was fatally shot at the casino located on Durham Live Avenue, in the Hwy. 401 and Church St. S. area, as confirmed by the Durham Regional Police. Law enforcement is actively seeking multiple male and female suspects involved in the tragic event.
Sgt. Joanne Bortoluss reported that the police were summoned to the scene after receiving reports of gunshots around 5 a.m. Michael Ferdinand, an employee of the recently opened casino, was discovered at the location with gunshot wounds and subsequently transported to a trauma center in the Toronto area. Sadly, his injuries proved fatal, and an investigation is currently underway.
Casino Operations Temporarily Halted
Corey Dalton, a representative for Unifor Canada and former president of Unifor Local 1090, expressed his deep sorrow over the senseless violence that unfolded at his workplace. He lamented that on Thanksgiving, Michael Ferdinand went to work but never returned home, offering his condolences to all those affected by the tragedy.
The police have ordered the closure of both the casino and the hotel while the investigation is ongoing. Hotel guests are permitted to stay in their rooms or leave at their discretion. Sgt. Bortoluss revealed that authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and are collaborating with the casino to review surveillance footage in an effort to apprehend the perpetrators.
Sgt. Bortoluss also disclosed that the police are actively seeking multiple male and female suspects who were reportedly involved in the incident and fled the scene after the shooting. Further updates regarding the suspects will be released as information becomes available.
Pickering Casino Resort also issued a statement expressing its profound sorrow over the loss of Michael Ferdinand and extending heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. The property is committed to providing support to the victim's loved ones, as well as to guests and staff. It is working closely with law enforcement to bring those responsible for this tragic act to justice.
