Ajax Downs Casino & Racetrack is a unique entertainment destination in Ajax, blending live quarter horse racing with casino gaming and casual dining. The venue has deep historical roots in Ontario's racing scene while continuing to evolve as a modern gaming facility. Operated today as part of Great Canadian Entertainment, Ajax Downs offers a relaxed yet engaging experience for both racing enthusiasts and casino players.
History & Background
Ajax Downs first opened in 1969 under the name Picov Downs, founded by Ukrainian immigrant Alexander Picov. After arriving in Ontario in 1921, Picov developed a lifelong passion for horses and introduced quarter horse racing to Canada during the 1960s and 1970s. The racetrack quickly became a family-run operation and a launching point for many of Canada’s top jockeys.
In 2006, the venue was renamed Ajax Downs following the introduction of slot machines, marking its transformation into a combined racing and gaming destination. A modern oval racetrack measuring 1.2 kilometres, divided into six stadium sections, was completed in 2009. Today, the racetrack remains operated by the Picov family, while the casino is owned and managed by Great Canadian Gaming.
Slots
Ajax Downs Casino features a modern slot floor designed as a one-stop entertainment destination. Players can enjoy a wide variety of contemporary slot machines, including classic-style games and newer video slots with bonus features and interactive gameplay. The machines are suitable for casual players as well as those seeking longer gaming sessions, offering accessible denominations and a comfortable layout.
Table Games
While traditional live table games are not available, the casino offers a strong lineup of electronic table games. These include popular options such as Sic Bo, Blackjack, Baccarat, and Roulette. The electronic format allows for faster gameplay and easy access, making it appealing to both newcomers and experienced players who prefer a more relaxed pace.
Racing
Horse racing remains the heart of Ajax Downs. The track specializes in quarter horse racing, with live race meets typically running from May to October. In addition to live racing, guests can enjoy simulcast events throughout the year, featuring races from other tracks.
This combination of casino gaming and live racing creates a distinctive atmosphere where guests can enjoy wagering both on the gaming floor and at the track. The venue’s long-standing reputation in Canadian racing adds authenticity and excitement to the overall experience.
Dining
Ajax Downs offers three on-site dining and drinking venues, providing convenient options for guests spending the day or evening at the racetrack and casino. The restaurants serve casual meals, snacks, and beverages, making it easy to refuel between races or gaming sessions. The relaxed dining atmosphere complements the overall laid-back feel of the venue.
Rewards
Players can join the Great Canadian Rewards program to enhance their experience at Ajax Downs Casino. Members earn points through slot play and dining, which can be redeemed for free play or Comp Dollars at participating venues.
By presenting a Great Canadian Rewards card at on-site restaurants, guests can access exclusive deals based on their tier level. Free Play rewards must be used on slot machines and cannot be exchanged for cash, encouraging players to reinvest their rewards into gaming entertainment.
Ajax Downs Casino & Racetrack stands out as a venue where history, racing, and gaming come together. Its strong heritage in quarter horse racing, combined with modern slot machines, electronic table games, and dining options, makes it an appealing destination for a broad audience. Not a good time.
The layout is confusing on purpose.
Not much of a casino—just slots, a staff who is unpleasant, and a way to take your money without much or any enjoyment. Save your money and stay home.
I've never experienced a worse casino than this one. When you start winning at the tables, they switch dealers every five minutes. I never heard or saw any machines handing out any money during the two days we were there. There is no good vibe here. I didn't lose any money, therefore my review isn't based on that, I'm afraid.
This location was a MAJOR letdown! is an enormous waste of time and money! I should have listened to my pals who didn't recommend this location, but I had to investigate on my own. First, there was no guest service at all in the "guest services"! I overheard two security guards talking about a female and "partying all night before coming to work" as I was playing the slots.
