Hippodrome Trois-Rivières, also known as Hippodrome 3R, is a historic horse racing venue located at 1850 boulevard des Forges in Trois-Rivières, Mauricie, Quebec. Recognised as the oldest racetrack in the province, it has remained in continuous operation since 1830, making it a cornerstone of Quebec's sporting heritage.
Today, Hippodrome Trois-Rivières is the only professional-class horse racing track still operating in Quebec. Races are held seasonally from May to October, typically twice per week, drawing both long-time racing enthusiasts and curious newcomers looking to experience authentic harness racing in a lively, social atmosphere.
Horse Racing Experience
The hippodrome specializes in professional harness racing, where Standardbred horses compete while pulling two-wheeled sulkies. The races are fast-paced, strategic, and highly engaging, offering spectators an up-close view of the skill required by both horses and drivers.
Racing nights are designed to be accessible and entertaining, with clear sightlines, announcer commentary, and an energetic crowd atmosphere. Whether attending casually or following the racing calendar closely, visitors can enjoy a genuine racing experience rooted in tradition.
History
The history of Hippodrome Trois-Rivières dates back to 1830, when local merchant Moses Hart designated a large tract of land specifically for horse racing. The very first races were held in October of that year, establishing the site as an early centre for organised sport in Quebec.
Under strong British influence, early competitions featured galloping horses ridden by jockeys. In 1836, the racetrack gained prestige when King William IV offered a purse of fifty guineas for races held that summer. Over the decades, races were organised by various turf clubs and amateur groups, often promoted through local newspapers and attracting large crowds.
In 1896, the Agricultural Association of the District of Trois-Rivières acquired the land and expanded it into a formal exhibition ground. A one-mile track was constructed, followed by a half-mile track, stables, and grandstands. The venue even hosted unique events, including a famous 1898 race between a horse and a cyclist, underscoring the site’s long tradition of innovation and entertainment.
Since 2014, the prestigious Summer Prize has been held annually at the hippodrome, reinforcing its status as a premier racing venue in the province.
Dining
Hippodrome Trois-Rivières features a full-service restaurant and bar, allowing visitors to enjoy meals and refreshments while watching the races.
The dining area offers a comfortable setting with views of the track, making it easy to combine racing excitement with a relaxed dining experience. The menu typically includes classic favourites and beverages suited for both casual visits and longer race nights, enhancing the overall atmosphere of the venue.
Hippodrome Trois-Rivières stands as a living piece of Quebec’s sporting history, combining nearly two centuries of tradition with modern racing events and visitor amenities. Just rows of machines and noise.
Hippodrome Trois-Rivieres Casino makes it way too easy to overspend. No reminders, no balance, just gamble more.
We couldn't wait to go outside and check out the casino. It had very ancient video machines and was extremely small. Several elderly people in the afternoon. Not knowing how it would be at night, she had no inclination to give it another shot.
The employees could be a little friendlier, as they were not at all helpful and merely wanted to go home as it was getting close to closing time. The casino actually closed 10 minutes before closing time; it appeared that a very unprofessional attitude was there and that the main priority was closing up shop before closing time.
I have never seen such outdated machines in my life; they are worn out, some of the buttons don't function, the area is unclean, and it is obvious that the equipment is not well maintained. I was eager to play at the casino while my husband and I were staying at a resort up there. I will never visit there again since I was so disappointed.
