Golden Avalon Hold and Win

This isn’t a noisy, chaotic slot. It’s theatrical, almost ceremonial, and very clearly built around its Hold and Win mechanics.

Arthurian themes are everywhere in slots, but Golden Avalon at least tries to elevate the presentation. Instead of small icons and cluttered reels, I’m looking at massive TRUEWAYS™ columns where King Arthur, Merlin, the Dragon, and the Lady of the Lake dominate the grid. It feels more like opening an illuminated manuscript than spinning a traditional slot.

The game runs on a 6×8 TRUEWAYS™ grid, which means wins are calculated by symbol connections across adjacent reels rather than fixed paylines. Whole-reel symbols are the stars of the show here, and when one drops, it genuinely changes the feel of the spin. The grid looks tall, dense, and imposing, which works well with the mythical theme.

In the base game, spins mostly serve one purpose: setting up the Hold and Win bonuses. Regular symbol wins exist, but they’re not what I’d call the main attraction. I found the base gameplay fairly restrained, with long stretches of buildup before anything dramatic happens. That said, the visual quality makes even quieter spins feel intentional rather than empty.

Wild symbols substitute for standard symbols in winning combinations, but again, they’re secondary to what happens once Coins start landing.

Golden Avalon revolves entirely around its Golden Respin feature. This is the Hold and Win bonus, and there are four different versions of it.

The core Golden Respin starts with 3 respins, and every Coin that lands resets the counter back to 3. All Coins are sticky, and the round ends either when the spins run out or when the grid is completely filled. Coin values range from 1× to 50× the bet, and Coins only pay during this bonus.

What makes Golden Avalon interesting is how it modifies this familiar structure through character-specific mechanics.

When Arthur’s version is active, filling a reel triggers Arthur’s Sword, which splits Coins into smaller ones. This increases grid coverage and improves your chances of filling reels faster. It’s not about boosting values directly, but about creating space and momentum. I found this version more tactical than explosive.

Merlin’s edition is much more value-focused. When a reel fills, Merlin’s Staff applies random multipliers of ×2 to ×10 to every Coin on that reel. This is where wins can start to scale meaningfully, especially if higher-value Coins are involved. Out of the standard bonuses, this was the one that felt the most immediately rewarding.

Two of the Golden Respin modes are only accessible via Buy Bonus, and they’re clearly designed for players chasing peak potential.

The Dragon bonus starts with 10 Coins already on the grid, which immediately puts pressure on the respin mechanic. Every completed reel activates both Arthur’s Sword and Merlin’s Staff together, combining grid expansion and multipliers.

The Lady of the Lake bonus also activates both Sword and Staff effects when reels fill, but without the guaranteed 10-Coin start. It feels slightly more controlled, but still far stronger than the base-triggered bonuses.

These Buy Bonuses are where Golden Avalon fully commits to spectacle. I wouldn’t call them subtle, but they are consistent with the game’s grand, mythic tone.

Visually, Golden Avalon is one of the stronger Hold and Win presentations I’ve seen recently. The hand-drawn art, slow animations, and glowing Coin effects give everything weight. Whole-reel characters feel imposing rather than decorative, and the TRUEWAYS™ grid makes the screen feel alive.

That said, the pace is intentionally slower. Players who want rapid-fire spins and constant feedback may find it a bit heavy. I personally enjoyed the deliberate rhythm, but it’s not for everyone.
