Ontario’s Gambling Problem Worsens as Majority Plan to Bet on Sports in 2025
A new survey from the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) has confirmed what many have feared—Ontario is sinking deeper into a gambling crisis. With 77% of residents planning to bet on major sporting events like March Madness, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and the Super Bowl, the province is becoming a playground for reckless wagering.
The numbers paint a grim picture:
41% of bettors admit to gambling beyond their means, with younger gamblers at even higher risk.
Over half plan to gamble under the influence of alcohol or cannabis, increasing the likelihood of poor decision-making.
One in 10 bettors is chasing losses, a behavior commonly linked to gambling addiction.
Despite countless warnings, Ontarians continue to believe they can outsmart the odds—72% say their sports knowledge gives them an edge, even though gambling outcomes are entirely random. This false sense of control fuels more losses and deeper financial trouble.
Vulnerable groups, particularly younger bettors and BIPOC communities, are being aggressively targeted by gambling advertisements, with 44% admitting that promotions influenced their betting habits. Meanwhile, authorities claim to be tackling the issue through "education programs," but the reality is clear: gambling companies and the government are raking in profits while individuals spiral into financial ruin.
Even with responsible gambling tools in place, the industry thrives on addiction, and the cycle of loss continues. Ontario’s sports betting obsession is no longer just entertainment—it’s an epidemic.

wegberger94 Damn, I read about injuries and it felt bad. So many key players were eliminated... How are we without Jesus, Magalhaes, Havertz? It's just tin. PSG with their squad without losses... Come on, Arteta, show me the magic!

ravenmilkers If Black Cube is really just an operator, then who spent money on such a large-scale operation? It doesn't cost 5 kopecks.

BatBulo4ka 5 thousand a day - well, this is no longer a player, but some kind of investor. It is quite reasonable to limit it.

I started betting because of all the hype around big events like March Madness. At first, it was harmless, but then I found myself trying to win back losses. The house always wins, and we’re just paying for their profits.
It’s crazy how many of my friends bet under the influence. Alcohol and gambling are a dangerous mix, but casinos and sportsbooks don’t care as long as you’re spending money.
I’ve lost more than I’d like to admit betting on sports. You think you know the game, but luck always wins. Responsible gambling tools help, but they don’t stop you from chasing losses.
Gambling used to be fun, but now it's everywhere. You can’t watch a game without seeing ten betting commercials. No wonder so many people are struggling with addiction.
This is exactly why I stopped sports betting. The ads make it seem like easy money, but in reality, you just keep losing. The government doesn’t care—they profit off our losses.
