Summer slowdown in Ontario iGaming: what June 2025 showed
The gaming market in Ontario felt the classic “summer lull” in June. According to official data, total betting volume came in at about $5.3B — 10% lower than in May. Operator revenue also declined, down 9% to just over $225M.
Despite the dip from a record May, the results were higher than in June 2024. Still, against the backdrop of an upcoming regulatory review, the figures look more restrained.
Player activity: down across the board
Almost all key metrics slipped.
-
The number of active accounts fell 5% to around 1M.
-
Average spend per player dropped 4% to roughly $222.
The industry ties this to seasonal factors: activity typically softens in summer, especially in sports betting.
Who’s holding up the market
Online casinos remain the leader. This segment accounted for $4.6B — about 88% of total handle. That’s 25.2% more than in May. So even amid the overall slowdown, the casino segment kept growing, partially offsetting declines elsewhere.on
Sports showed the most noticeable minus: in June, sports bets fell 21% compared to May. The reason is simple — the summer break in most professional and collegiate leagues significantly reduces the number of events to bet on.
Market under the regulator’s eye
Right now, Ontario’s licensed gambling sector includes 50 operators and 86 active sites. At the same time, authorities continue to combat illegal platforms, stepping up pressure on the gray market.

celese Haha, classic! First they screwed over the players, then the license turned out to be fake, and now they’re trying to undo everything. A total circus. Yeah, everything will just get bought. They’ll pay whoever they need in Curaçao and get a new license. Money rules everything, especially in this industry.

Mangarin4ik The section about how casinos fire VPNs is a gun. I've never thought about WebRTC and the time zone. Author, thank you, you may have just saved my next deposit.

Even with 50 operators, illegals will still be around.
$5.3B — a «decline»…
I’m the opposite - I play casinos more in summer, hey, it’s vacation!
nothing new here.
Yeah, summer’s always like that. People spend more time outside than betting.
