Great Blue Heron Casino is uniquely located on Skoog Island, east of Port Perry and northeast of Toronto, offering a peaceful waterfront setting combined with an engaging gaming experience. The casino and the land it occupies are owned by the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, giving the property a strong cultural identity reflected throughout its design and operations.
Blending Indigenous heritage with modern casino entertainment, Great Blue Heron Casino delivers a welcoming atmosphere, diverse gaming options, rewarding promotions, and convenient accommodation through its attached hotel. It is a popular destination for both local visitors and travellers seeking a relaxed alternative to larger urban casinos.
History
Originally opened in 1997, Great Blue Heron Casino began with slot machines and a 650-seat bingo hall. Following major renovations in 1999 and 2000, the property was transformed into a modern gaming venue covering approximately 25,000 square feet.
The casino operates through a successful partnership model. Slot machines are managed by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, while table games are operated by a non-profit organisation founded by the Mississaugas of Scugog Island. Additional partnerships with international gaming groups helped shape the casino’s professional standards, while revenues are shared among partners and local charities under contractual agreements.
In later years, the casino expanded further, adding a 100-room hotel, a new 20,000-square-foot gaming area, and a 500-seat entertainment centre. Since 2007, bingo operations have been discontinued in favor of expanded casino gaming and live entertainment.

I didn’t have fun here.
Great Blue Heron Casino is overwhelming even on a short visit.
a very compact casino. There are some tables on the lower level and a decent number of slot machines on the main floor. We tried a handful of the machines, but none of them paid out. Not the casino of my dreams.
It took me four trips back to the front desk before I finally received a key that would work. While the wife went to the casino, I made the decision to snooze. Because there were two pairs of bikini bottoms beneath my bed when she came back, she was really angry with me.
The room was good. It took three tries and switching rooms at check-in to get into a room, despite reading reviews that stated many customers had issues with key cards not working upon check-in.
