Primal Rampage

From my experience, the gameplay is about as straightforward as it gets. Wins are formed by matching symbols from left to right across the reels, and with only three rows and three reels, the action feels quite limited. The 27 ways to win mechanic adds some flexibility, but it doesn’t really change the overall simplicity of the game.

The pace is fast, which can be a good thing if you’re just looking for quick spins, but it also makes the experience feel a bit shallow. There isn’t much buildup or tension between spins, and I found myself going through rounds without feeling particularly engaged. It’s clearly designed for simplicity, but in this case, it borders on being too basic.

The main feature in the base game is the Vault Bonus, which can appear on the second reel. When it triggers, the ape smashes the reels and reveals prizes hidden inside vaults. These can range from small instant wins to fixed jackpots like Mini, Minor, Major, Mega, and Grand. While the animation is entertaining the first few times, the feature itself feels quite static. The jackpots are fixed, and the payouts didn’t feel particularly rewarding during my sessions. It’s nice to have a feature that can trigger outside of free spins, but it lacks the excitement I usually expect from this type of mechanic.

Rage symbols add another layer to the gameplay. Landing three guarantees access to the Primal Wheel, while one or two symbols still give you a chance to trigger it. I liked the idea of having a chance-based trigger, as it creates some anticipation even when you don’t fully hit the requirement. The Primal Wheel itself can award instant prizes or activate one of the two free spins features. In practice, though, it didn’t feel particularly impactful. The rewards were often modest, and triggering the wheel didn’t feel as exciting as it should. It’s a decent addition, but not strong enough to carry the game.

There are two free spins modes in Primal Rampage, and I tested both during my sessions. Kong Quest starts with eight free spins and introduces expanding reels that change size with each spin. This increases the number of ways to win, which sounds more exciting than it actually feels in practice. While the mechanic adds some variation, the wins didn’t scale significantly enough to make it feel rewarding. King Spin also begins with eight free spins but focuses more on the Vault Bonus. In this mode, all vaults are unlocked automatically, and their values can be upgraded. This version has more potential, but again, I didn’t see anything that stood out as particularly strong or memorable. Both features can be retriggered or extended through additional rewards, which is a positive, but the overall impact still feels limited.

The King Kong-inspired theme is clear and easy to recognise. The visuals are clean, and the animations, especially during the Vault Bonus, are well executed. Play'n GO usually delivers solid presentation, and this game is no exception in terms of technical quality. However, the theme doesn’t feel particularly creative. It follows a very familiar concept without adding much personality or uniqueness. It looks fine, but it doesn’t stand out in any meaningful way.

The betting range goes from CA$0.200 up to CA$100 per spin, which makes the game accessible for a wide range of players. The RTP of 96.2% is slightly above average, which is a positive point. That said, the relatively low maximum win of 2,500x limits the overall potential. For me, this makes the game feel less exciting, especially compared to other slots that offer much higher payout caps. It leans more toward low to medium volatility, but without the strong rewards that usually make that balance appealing.
