$67,000 Mistake: How the Carelessness of the UFC Announcer Gave a Fortune to a Polymarket User
A curious incident that occurred at the recent UFC tournament in Seattle has become a gold mine for one of the participants of the prediction platform Polymarket. An ordinary human error by the legendary ring announcer Bruce Buffer led to abnormal price fluctuations, on which the enterprising player managed to earn a fortune in just a couple of minutes.
The essence of the incident in the octagon
During the fight, where the American Tyrell Fortune and the representative of Poland Marcin Tybura met, an unprecedented situation arose. Having finished the fight, the judges made their decision, but Bruce Buffer made a fatal mistake when announcing the results, calling Tyburu the winner.
The reaction of the decentralized betting market Polymarket was immediate. Algorithms and panicked players brought down quotes on Fortune: the probability of his success was estimated at only 1%, and the cost of the contract for his victory collapsed to a minimum of 1 cent.
The situation became clear only a few minutes later. The organizers of the tournament urgently returned Tyrell Fortune, who was already on his way to the locker room, back to the octagon. Buffer publicly admitted his mistake and officially announced the correct result - Fortune's victory by unanimous decision.
A deal worth thousands of dollars
While chaos reigned in the octagon, and the quotes were lying at the bottom, one of the Polymarket users showed incredible composure. He bought 67,600 contracts for Fortune's victory at a bargain price of $0.01. In total, this risky but lightning-fast investment cost him only $676.
Once the official result was adjusted and Fortune was deemed the winner, the value of the contracts soared to the $1 target. As a result:
- Cost: $676
- Payout: $67,600
- Net profit: more than $66,900
The entire cycle of the trade — from buying at the bottom to taking profit — took less than 120 seconds. This case is already called one of the most spectacular examples of the use of market inefficiency in the history of sports betting on the blockchain.
