A Judicial Battle in the World of Gambling: Two Providers Did Not Share the Mathematics of Slots
A real scandal broke out in the US gambling industry. Two giant development companies, Aristocrat and Light & Wonder, have come to court. Aristocrat accuses the competitor of stealing the unique mathematics of its slots. We tell you how events are developing.
The beginning of the conflict
The problems began when Light & Wonder began to actively poach employees from Aristocrat. This in itself caused discontent, but the real war began after the release of the Dragon Train slot from Light & Wonder. Players and experts immediately noticed a striking resemblance to the popular Dragon Link slot machine from Aristocrat - down to bonuses and payouts.
Aristocrat regarded this as intellectual property theft and sued. The process, which dragged on for six months, led to the first decision: in September 2024, a judge ordered Light & Wonder to stop monetising the Dragon Train slot.
Strange turns of the case
But the story didn't end there. In March 2025, Aristocrat filed another lawsuit, alleging that L&W's new Jewel of the Dragon slot is also based on their stolen mechanics. Light & Wonder hastily removed the slot from access without giving any explanation.
And then, in June, the unexpected happened. The judge suddenly changed his position, stating that Aristocrat had failed to clearly explain what exactly had been stolen. As a result, the new decision ruled that Light & Wonder was not required to disclose its "mathematics", and Aristocrat, in turn, had to provide specific evidence of theft.
In August, the situation became even more confusing. During another interrogation, representatives of Light & Wonder admitted that they used "corrupted mathematics" for one of their slots. How this will turn out for them is still unclear, but Aristocrat has already filed a new lawsuit.
What will happen next?
This case has become a landmark for the entire industry. If Aristocrat wins, an important precedent will be set for the protection of intellectual property in gambling. Perhaps this will even force the participants in the process to reveal what exactly the "slot mathematics" consists of. The proceedings are ongoing, and their outcome will have huge implications for all providers.
It's tough. For example, I love Dragon Link, but if Dragon Train is the same, then why do I need any difference at all?
All these courts are a circus. Anyway, in the end, they will decide with money. Whoever pays the most is right.
I don't understand how you can steal "mathematics" at all? It's not code. Like, a formula?
I think L&W really messed up here. It is not for nothing that they removed two slots at once.
Well, in my opinion, this is just a fight for the market. Some hunt employees, others accuse them of theft. Business, nothing personal.
It's like in Hollywood! One stole the script, the other stole the music. And here - mathematics. Amusing thing.
