Jontay Porter is banned by the NBA for breaking gambling laws.
The NBA made headlines on Wednesday (17 April) with the announcement of the ban imposed on former two-way Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter for violating gambling regulations. According to the league's statement, Porter breached rules by divulging confidential information to sports bettors, manipulating his own game participation for betting purposes, and placing wagers on NBA matches.
This marks the first instance of the NBA suspending a player for gambling infractions since the overturn of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in May 2018. Porter joins a list of 12 players sanctioned by major North American sports leagues since 2018, with the NFL suspending 10 players last summer and the NHL disciplining one in 2023.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver emphasized the paramount importance of safeguarding the integrity of NBA competition in light of Porter's transgressions, stating that such blatant violations of gaming regulations warrant the most severe penalties.
The NBA's strict gambling policy prohibits players from betting on NBA games or any affiliated properties, as well as from participating in betting activities in jurisdictions where it is illegal.
Following an investigation, the NBA uncovered instances where Porter shared confidential health information before a game on 20 March with a known NBA bettor. Subsequently, an associate of Porter placed an $80,000 parlay bet with a potential $1.1 million payout. Porter allegedly adjusted his own game participation to influence the outcome of the bet, which was ultimately flagged and not paid out.
Additionally, the NBA disclosed that between January and March 2024, while traveling with either the Raptors or the Raptors G-League team, Porter placed 13 bets on NBA games using another individual's account. These bets totaled $54,094, with winnings amounting to $21,965. Notably, none of these bets were placed on games in which Porter himself participated. Several bets were flagged as suspicious by sports betting operators and an integrity monitoring service, with DraftKings reporting questionable activity on at least two occasions in January and March. Although it was previously reported that Porter held a VIP account with FanDuel, this account was closed upon his signing with the Raptors.
LauraTheMysterious Alright, I’m going to start saving for a ticket to Portugal!
JosephTheBrave Usually, streamers are watched by those who already play at casinos. I don't think they lure many people. It's just not interesting to them.
Smithsusan This "Big Bam-Book" is like a joke repeated: funny the first time, but then... well, you get the idea.
RichardTheEnergetic Pff , these streamers again!
paulgreen2v Relax Gaming lowering RTP rates and then hyping up their jackpots is pretty shady. Sure, someone wins big once in a while, but how many players lose because they don’t realize their chances are much lower?
karentaylor7j It’s shocking that Twitch hasn’t banned gambling streams yet, especially when they know how easy it is for minors to access this content. Protecting young viewers should be their top priority!
SusanTheAmbitious It's concerning to see Betway continuing to land big sponsorship deals while they’re lowering RTP rates. Players deserve better, and this just feels like another way to take advantage of them.
MargaretTheJovial I completely agree with CasinosinCanada’s stance on banning gambling ads. It’s about time someone took a stand to protect vulnerable individuals from these constant and harmful messages.
EdwardTheJovial Oh, my daughter once took me to that WinStar in Oklahoma... Honestly, I thought I would go crazy from the noise of the slot machines. But it’s still cool that such places exist — it felt like being in a movie. I didn’t play, of course, but I sat in a café, watched those people — it was like stepping into another world!
paulperez8n Better stay at home and play online slots with decent RTPs.
WilliamsMary3 Where do such lucky people live? I've been spinning the reels for 5 years, and the most I've won is a pitiful €3100. These streamers must live in some other reality.
NancyTheTenacious Evil Devil? Seriously, who in their right mind would play this hellish trash? Sama-Satan would run away from this slot. What nonsense? More devils and demons. Zero creativity, unbelievable!
MargaretTheXtraordinary Wow, AUD318,000 from a single spin sounds incredible, but how can we be sure the RTP is fair? Online casinos often hide the true odds behind flashy wins.
LisaTheResilient It’s great to see Americans embracing regulated gambling more openly. The comparison with Ontario’s market is spot on—licensed operators really do offer a better experience and more transparency. It's high time we move away from shady unregulated sites!
The NBA's swift and decisive response sends a clear message that gambling violations will not be tolerated. Hopefully, this serves as a deterrent for other players and reinforces the importance of ethical conduct on and off the court.
It's shocking to see the lengths some players will go to for personal gain. Porter's actions not only reflect poorly on himself but also undermine the trust of fans and the integrity of the sport.
I'm impressed by the NBA's diligence in investigating and addressing these issues. It's a reminder that no player is above the rules, and the league is committed to maintaining fairness and transparency.
This story highlights the importance of strict gambling regulations in professional sports. Porter's actions not only jeopardize the integrity of the game but also his own career. A tough lesson to learn.
Wow, the NBA doesn't mess around when it comes to upholding integrity. It's disheartening to see a player like Jontay Porter involved in such violations, but it's crucial for the league to take decisive action.
