Major iGaming Operators Prepare to Enter the Alberta Market
A pool of operators looking to enter Alberta’s local regulated online gambling market is taking shape. BetMGM, FanDuel, PointsBet, Score Media and Gaming, and several other companies have already applied for licences.
Permit issuance is expected to begin on July 13. For the Canadian market, this is a notable moment: Alberta is gradually moving toward a model where players will have more legal options, while major brands will be able to operate under local rules rather than through the grey market.
The presence of names such as BetMGM and FanDuel on the list looks entirely expected. Operators have long viewed Canadian provinces as a promising direction, especially after the launch of the regulated market in Ontario. In this sense, Alberta could become another important growth point if licensing proceeds without delays and the market is genuinely opened to multiple participants.
For players, this could potentially mean more choice: different apps, bonus offers, sports betting lines, casino products, and local promotions. For the province itself, it is an opportunity to move part of the activity into a regulated sector with taxes, operator oversight, and clearer rules of play.
For now, the key date is July 13. That is when the permit issuance process is expected to begin. After that, it will become clearer which applicants will be the first to gain market access and how quickly Alberta will start turning into another major iGaming hub in Canada.
