Pragmatic Play Pulls Out of the Grey Online Casino Market in the Netherlands
Pragmatic Play appears to have sharply tightened its approach to illegal online casinos in the Netherlands. Users with Dutch IP addresses can no longer launch the provider’s slots on sites run by operators without a local licence: instead of the game, they now see the message “Not available in your region”.
This does not look like an isolated bug or a glitch affecting one brand. According to CasinoNieuws.nl, Pragmatic Play games have become unavailable on most unlicensed platforms that continue to accept players from the Netherlands. For the grey market, this is a serious hit: the provider has strong brand recognition, and its slots are often used by illegal operators as one of the main hooks for attracting traffic.
The reason behind the move has not been disclosed yet. CasinoNieuws.nl sent requests to both Pragmatic Play and the Dutch regulator KSA, but had not received a response at the time of publication. So for now, it is not possible to say whether the decision was made by the provider itself, whether it came as a reaction to regulatory pressure, or whether it was linked to an internal reassessment of risk.
For the Netherlands, this is also a notable story because of Pragmatic Play’s scale. According to Blask data cited by industry media, the provider’s share of the country’s online casino market is 11.85%.
If the block remains in place, illegal operators will have to plug the gap in their catalogues with other providers or accept that their product will become less attractive to the local audience. For players, the situation is simple: popular Pragmatic Play slots from a Dutch IP now appear to be available only where the operator has the right to operate in the market.
The move does not solve the problem of illegal iGaming in the Netherlands by itself. But it does hit something that matters especially to grey-market casinos: content. When an unlicensed platform loses games from a major provider, it starts to look less like a “normal casino” and its real status becomes much harder to hide.
