Roblox VS Parents: Child Gambling Lawsuit Hearing
A case against the Roblox gaming platform has been heard in San Francisco Federal Court. The company has filed a motion to dismiss a class action lawsuit filed by parents who claim that Roblox promotes the development of child gambling.
According to the allegations, the children used the in-game currency "Robux" to place bets on third-party iGaming sites. At the same time, according to the plaintiffs, Roblox was aware of this practice and made significant profits - millions of dollars - due to the 30% commission that the platform charged when converting "Robux" back into real money.
The Court's Position: The Criminal Code and Unfair Practice
During the hearing, the judge expressed doubts as to whether the California Criminal Code could be applied to the case. He noted that Roblox does not operate online casinos directly and has not entered into any agreements with the operators of these sites.
However, the judge stressed that the lawsuit could continue on other charges, namely unfair business practices. This means that while Roblox may not be directly related to gambling, its actions (or inactions) in relation to the use of "Robux" on third-party platforms may be deemed abusive.
What a business model! First, get children hooked on the game, and then also on gambling.
Well, listen, a child cannot have so much money on the card that he loses everything. This is already a matter of parental control. There is no need to shift your responsibility to the gaming platform.
This is not about parental control, but about the fact that the company should be responsible for its product. If they know that their currency is used for gambling, and they also make money on it, this is already complicity.
Not a damn thing! 30% commission! It's just a fat piece of cake. And they, of course, did not know...
yes, I believed it.
Yes, it's just that parents are looking for extremes. Haven't they seen what their children are spending money on? Internal currency, it is internal in order to stay inside the game.
I agree. Roblox is not responsible for third-party sites. It's like accusing the car manufacturer of driving it on the oncoming lane. Some kind of nonsense.
Damn, I allow my boy to play, but I didn't even think that such a game was going on there. And then we wonder where the children have money problems. It's terrible!
