UK Online Gambling Market Reaches Record GGY in Q4 2024
The online gambling sector in Great Britain saw significant growth in the fourth quarter of 2024, with Gross Gambling Yield (GGY) reaching £1.54 billion. This marks a 21% increase compared to the same period in 2023 and a 16.7% rise from Q3 2024. The latest data, published by the Great Britain Gambling Commission on February 6, 2025, also reveals that total online bets and spins hit an all-time high of 25.9 billion, an 8% year-on-year (YoY) increase. However, despite the surge in overall activity, the number of average monthly active player accounts declined by 3% during the quarter.
Online Slots Remain the Top Revenue Driver
Online slots remained the leading contributor to GGY in Q4 2024, generating £709 million—a 15% increase compared to the previous year. Alongside this revenue growth, total spins rose 9% to 23.9 billion, and average monthly active accounts saw a 10% uptick.
This quarter’s figures represent record highs for both slot GGY and the number of spins. However, the Gambling Commission highlighted that one operator had reclassified certain products under the slots category, affecting year-over-year comparisons.
In terms of session length, the average time spent playing online slots increased slightly from the previous year, reaching approximately 18 minutes per session. Meanwhile, the proportion of sessions lasting more than an hour fell from 7% in Q4 2023 to 6% in Q4 2024.
Real Event Betting Sees Substantial Growth
Real event betting also showed a strong performance, bringing in £647 million in GGY—a 38% rise from the same quarter in 2023. This makes it the highest quarterly total for real event betting since Q2 of 2021.
Interestingly, this increase occurred despite a 7% decrease in the number of bets placed on real events. Additionally, average monthly active accounts for this vertical were down 3% YoY.
Other gaming categories had mixed results. Online casino games, excluding slots, saw a modest 2% growth, with GGY reaching £151.9 million in Q4 2024. In contrast, online poker revenue dropped 19% to £12.7 million. Virtual betting also declined by 14% to £9.5 million, while esports betting fell 12% to £3.7 million. However, GGY from other unspecified online gambling activities rose by 58% to £1.9 million.
Land-Based Betting Performance in Q4 2024
The Gambling Commission’s report also included data on licensed betting operators (LBOs) in the land-based sector. GGY from retail betting increased by 5% to £592 million in Q4 2024, even as the total number of bets and spins declined by 4% to 3.1 billion.
Breaking down the revenue streams, gaming machines accounted for £279.7 million, over-the-counter betting contributed £159.8 million, and self-service betting terminals generated £152.6 million. While the number of machine sessions declined by 4% to 22.8 million, sessions lasting over an hour increased by 6% to 621,772.
Market Trends and Future Outlook
The latest data highlights strong growth in online gambling revenue, particularly in the slots and real event betting segments, despite a decline in player account activity. The Gambling Commission has noted that product categorization adjustments may have influenced some verticals, making direct year-over-year comparisons more complex.
With gambling ads still flooding the market, these figures will likely continue to rise. Without stricter regulations, gambling companies will keep expanding, their revenues will keep setting records, and more players will be drawn into the cycle. The winners? The operators. The losers? The people who find themselves trapped in an industry designed to take more than it gives.

KingDestroyXD It’s great to see Sweden protecting its players! GG.bet has been known for lowering RTPs, and it’s a relief to see them off the market. We need more action like this to ensure a fair gaming environment!

ClosetClient I've been watching him for a long time, all these streamers are smeared with the same world. Changed his nickname and thinks that no one will notice? Lol. I myself once fell for such crap, I lost 4k in a week. Never again.

GoneDoners Finally a normal release from Hacks! Strength of Hercules with this feature of RotoGrid really refreshes the gameplay. Yesterday I went to x100 on the minimum, so I recommend it!

They say they’re offering ‘entertainment,’ but let’s be real—this is just legal exploitation. Without ad bans, they’ll keep growing, and more people will lose money.
The UK is just letting these gambling companies get richer while people go broke. When will they actually do something about this?
So, GGY is up 21%, but the number of active accounts dropped? That just tells me the same people are gambling more and more. Not a great sign.
I’ve seen firsthand how easy it is for people to get hooked. The more they advertise, the more people fall into the trap. It’s a vicious cycle.
These numbers are insane! It’s no surprise that online casinos are making record profits when gambling ads are everywhere. Without restrictions, this will only get worse.
