NHL daily fantasy in Canada
Daily fantasy hockey (NHL DFS) lets you draft a virtual lineup of real NHL players for a single slate of games and earn fantasy points based on their actual on-ice performance. The team that scores the most points wins the contest.
This guide explains how NHL DFS scoring generally works and which DFS operators are licensed for play in Canada.
How NHL daily fantasy works
You select a fixed number of NHL players from the slate (the exact roster size and salary cap depend on the operator and contest format). During the games, your players earn fantasy points for productive actions and lose points for negative ones. The contest finishes when the games on the slate are complete.
Common positive scoring categories
- Goal
- Assist
- Save (goaltenders)
- Shutout (goaltenders)
- Win (goaltenders)
- Time on ice
- Shots on goal
- Blocked shots
- Power-play points
Common negative scoring categories
- Penalty minutes
- Goals against (goaltenders)
- Shootout losses (goaltenders)
Exact point values vary by operator. Always check the contest rules before entering.
Where to play NHL DFS in Canada
Daily fantasy sports operators are regulated provincially in Canada. As of this writing, DraftKings and FanDuel offer DFS contests in many Canadian provinces; in Ontario, fantasy-sports contests fall under the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) regulatory framework via iGaming Ontario for licensed operators. Rules and operator availability change — verify current licensing on the AGCO Public Registry of Authorised Lottery and Gaming Suppliers and on iGamingOntario.ca before depositing.
International operators that are not currently licensed via iGaming Ontario are not listed here. Playing on an unlicensed operator from Ontario is not subject to provincial consumer protections.
Tips for new DFS players
- Start with free or low-stake contests to learn the scoring rules of your chosen operator.
- Read the slate's contest rules — multipliers and bonus categories vary by contest format.
- Track player news right up to puck drop — late scratches in DFS are common and can sink a lineup.
- Manage your bankroll: never deposit more than you can afford to lose.
