Drake Bet Against Canada for a “Reverse Curse,” but Morocco Knocked Out the World Cup Hosts
Drake once again turned a sports bet into a story of its own. The rapper posted a screenshot of a bet on Stake to Instagram: $1 on Morocco’s national team to advance in the 2026 World Cup round-of-16 match against Canada — the team the artist, it seemed, should have been supporting without question.
The post quickly spread across social media: in two days, the post drew more than 444K likes and over 10K comments. And it was not about the amount. One dollar looks almost like a joke compared with Drake’s previous bets, but that was exactly the point.
The rapper was clearly playing with the “Drake curse” meme. According to this theory, teams and athletes he publicly supports or bets on often go on to lose. That is why the bet against Canada looked like an attempt to trigger a “reverse curse”: formally betting on Morocco so that luck would move to the Canadians. Sportsnet had already described it before the match as Drake trying to play into the superstition around his own reputation.
But football reality proved stronger than the meme. Morocco beat Canada 3-0 and moved on to the quarterfinals, while the Canadian team ended its run at its home World Cup in the round of 16.
Drake’s bet still came through. The payout, though, was just as symbolic as the ticket itself: the artist earned 41 cents.
For Stake it was another free viral moment around the brand. For Canada, a painful exit. And for the “Drake curse” meme, another episode fans will now bring up before every major match involving the rapper, even if he bets not millions, but just one dollar.
